Note: In case you're not familiar, each year the youth leaders of our church take the "young women" {ages 12 - 18} camping. The experience is spiritual, education, & most of all - FUN! Usually we stay in tents, but this year wecamped "GLAMPED" in cabins near Heber, Utah. It was heavenly! In the next few days, I'll be sharing the details about our camp.
We have a lot of fun activities at girl's camp, but dance night is a favorite of the girls & leaders alike. Each group of girls is given a different pre-selected song a couple of hours before the program. Then, we meet at the stage & par-tay! I'm always amazed at the choreography those talented girls come up with in such a short time!
I was given the task of choosing a dozen or so upbeat songs with an uplifting message & lyrics that would be appropriate for a church camp. Here's my list {I've carefully screened the lyrics.}
12 Dance Songs with Squeaky Clean Lyrics
- Happy - Farrell Williams
- The Sound of Sunshine - Michael Franti
- Good Times - CHIC
- Walking on Sunshine - Aly & A.J.
- Celebrate - Kool & the Gang
- Everything is Awesome - Lego Movie
- We are Family - Sister Sledge
- We Got the Beat - The Go-Gos
- Footloose - Glee Cast or Kenny Loggins
- Twist & Shout - Beatles
- Let's Get Loud - Jennifer Lopez
- You Don't Know You're Beautiful - One Direction
Our camp cooks - who always surprise us with something hilarious. Here they are on their kiddie cars & scooters with their interpretation of Low Rider {another clean song by War}
Did I mention your favorite clean song? If not, please leave a comment.

I was just called to Ward Camp Leader today and camp is in three weeks. And I look on here, and you were my roommate at BYU when you got engaged to your honey! I'm Shauna and I was in the room with Tana. Thanks for the great tips!
ReplyDeleteHi Shauna!! Thanks for your message! We keep bumping into each other & it is so fun to reconnect. Have fun at Girl's Camp.
DeleteLove ya, Michelle
I really love this idea! Did each ward get props to go with their song or did they just have those on hand? Also, were the songs given to the wards before camp or while you were up there? I was just called as Stake Camp Director and I haven't been to camp since I was a girl... feeling a bit like a fish out of water here. I really love dance night though! This is something new to bring to the table. Did you do skits as well during the week or did this take the place of the skits?
ReplyDeleteHello & thank you for your message. It was tradition NOT to give the songs ahead of time so everyone was on equal ground with preparation time. It was amazing what the girls came up with though. (However the adults did prepare ahead of time because we aren't as talented - LOL). Some years we did skits as well. We always had fun with both - but I think the dance night is the best. After each group did their dances, we would all dance together "mosh pit style". So fun. I also love the idea of a photo booth - you can see the one we did here - http://www.michellelunt.com/2014/06/dr-seuss-girls-camp-decorations.html
