The Importance of First Impressions

Did you know that the entry way
is one of the most important spaces in your home?

Why? Because most people never make it past
either your front door or your entry way.

When Joan called me to help with the design choices
for her renovation, my first piece of advice was that
we had to deal with the stairway.

Because this is what every visitor to her home
saw as soon as they came through the door . . .
The carpet was tired
{cleaning it was not enough - the pad was worn in the center}
& the woodwork on the railings wasn't doing them
any favors!

So, we took the staircase from
worn to "WOW"!

Obviously, we can't all afford a complete remodel
like this -so here are a few tips to "fluff up" your entry:
  • Clean your front door & porch frequently - sweep up the dead leaves & cob webs, clean the glass, etc.
  • Make sure to get rid of any worn out rugs or door mats
  • Put a pretty wreath on your front door
  • Replace dirty or out-dated light fixtures
  • Put a fresh coat of paint on your door if needed
  • It's nice to have pot-pourri or a plug-in air freshener by the front door
  • Try a mirror in your entry way - they almost always look great there!
Here's another look at the staircase . . .

  2. Wowza! What a difference, Michelle! I just cleaned my front windows around my door; perhaps I need to do a little de-webbing as well, great ideas. I wanted to share something I found on Pinterest that reminded me of you! Little Valentine's printables that say Love, Trust and Pixie Dust... so cute! http://www.creativegreenliving.com/2013/02/free-printable-valentines-day-tags-love.html

  3. Wow...what an amazing transformation!! I found your blog when searching for over 40 bloggers. I first had the idea to start a blog for "older moms" when I was noticing a lot of blogs were aimed toward moms with young children. I applaud these and the help, companionship, information and support they provide and I still remember those days well.....well, most days I remember them well!! However, my kids are grown and I'm no longer in my 30's....or 40’s and some of the information I was getting was no longer relevant and some of the information I was seeking was not out there. I thought there must be others out there who felt the same... so, here I am and I hope I’m not alone!!

  6. Oh so much better! Now, can someone do mine? We pulled the cruddy carpet off and found pressed board below...with big gaps on the sides. So ugly. Now we have to figure out how to finish them. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
