What it's Like to be on TV & My Latest Appearance

I just got back from filming a segment on our local SLC Studio 5 lifestyle show.  {CLICK HERE to see the video.} I'm often asked questions about being on TV, so I thought I'd write a bit about what it's really like.

- The new Studio 5 set is gorgeous -

Being on television is one of my favorite things to do. It's exciting, but not scary {at least for me}. Although, I have to admit I am a person who doesn't hate attention. *Wink*.  In order to avoid being nervous, I don't dwell on the idea that thousands of people may be watching - but rather just pretend I'm crafting/designing/ sewing with a girlfriend. Which brings me to Brooke Walker - who I really do consider a friend. She is the "real deal" - beautiful inside & out, intelligent, & oh-so-ambitious. Best of all, she goes out of her way to make the guests on Studio 5 feel welcome & comfortable.
So, what's it like? The studio is usually really quiet with just a handful of people in the room.  The biggest challenge is the time constraint. The shortest segment I've ever done was 3 minutes! That's not much time to teach something or get a point across. My longest segment was 8 minutes - which in TV is an eternity. The average is about 5 minutes. There are no rehearsals, so you just have to pace the information you're giving out as best you can. If something goes wrong, it's best to just roll with it & keep talking. "Dead air" is not a good thing!
The hosts of the television shows are great. Filming day after day, they must meet so many people. Somehow, they have a tendency to make you feel important anyway. The women are almost always quite tall {I've even been known to stand on a box so I don't look so short next to them}. EVERYONE is thinner in person - to the point that you wonder if some of them ever eat!
What I stress about most - and this will sound shallow - is what to wear. Sometimes I go shopping for something new, but usually I just resort to some old thing in my closet. I often wear dark colors so I don't look so huge next to the skinny hosts. I try to wear a heel if possible, & some accessory up near the face is  a good thing because the shot is usually from the waist up.
The vibe at each channel is so different. Channel 13 is the most laid back. Sometimes it seems like they hardly notice you're there! And they are hilarious - even off camera. Channel 2 is has the prettiest offices. It's what you would imagine a tv studio should look like. Channel 4 feels like you're just hanging out with your girlfriends. And Channel 5 is my fav because I love the people there & what they stand for.
